MARTINS FERRY — East Ohio Regional Hospital received the Platinum Award for its campaign to educate staff, visitors and the community to increase organ donation registration.
The hospital received the award through its 2024 DoNation Campaign that challenges organizations to educate their staff, visitors and communities about the need for organ, eye and tissue donation.
EORH partnered with Lifeline of Ohio to increase its outreach efforts. Kimberly Fador, director of quality and risk, said the campaign is a national initiative that unites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration and the organ donation community with workplaces across the nation in spreading the word about the importance of donation.
“The Platinum Award signifies that our hospital not only meets but exceeds the standards of excellence in promoting donation awareness. It demonstrates our ongoing efforts to educate staff, patients and the community about the life-saving impact of donation,” Fador said.
EORH has training and outreach programs to guide people through the donation process.
Fador said the campaign has organ donation events throughout the year where it receives points, and the award is for what it did between Oct. 1, 2023, and Oct. 1, 2024. The Platinum Award represents the highest level of points an organization can obtain through the different activities.
EORH “takes great pride in being recognized with the Platinum Award for our commitment to donation awareness and registration. This prestigious award reflects our hospital’s unwavering dedication to saving lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation. As healthcare providers, we understand the critical importance of organ donation in offering hope to patients and their families, and we are committed to playing a leading role in this vital cause,” the hospital said in a release.
According to the hospital, every nine minutes another person is added to the national organ transplant waiting list, which reaffirms the critical and growing need for more registered organ, eye and tissue donors.
The campaign highlights the need for people to register for organ donation. The Platinum Award shows how the hospital has been successful at increasing donor registrations.
Fador said this award is very near and dear to staff members’ hearts because they want to help any families they can. She wants good to come out of tragedy, turning the loss of a loved one to joy for those receiving an organ donation.
Lifeline of Ohio Donation Program Coordinator April Lopez said one donor can enhance the lives of 75 people from tissue donation, and one cornea donation can restore the sight of two people.
Lopez said people can help save and enhance lives across Ohio and the world if they register to be an organ donor. People can research and learn more about organ, eye and tissue donation from East Ohio Regional Hospital.
“We are honored to be recognized with the Platinum Award, and it reinforces our commitment to fostering a culture of donation within our hospital,” Fador said. “This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our entire team, whose efforts ensure that we not only deliver high-quality care but also contribute to a greater mission of giving hope to those in need.”
